The Steady Beat

Unassuming machines are these

Escalators climb the building, slow and steady

Creating a rhythm

Elevators spring into action with an inviting tone

An automated mail cart rolls by with ease

I can rely on these mechanical colleagues

They are consistent

I’m not so sure about the organic ones…yet

The stress lingering outside cannot get past the strong walls

The windows reveal a blue sky and green grass

The colors are muted, like a painting

They don’t make an effort to be flashy

They don’t need the attention

I leave the safety of this place and return to reality

No longer surrounded by my metal friends

No longer embraced by brick and glass

The harsh truth is thrust upon me

The silence is overwhelming
